SLEEPING BAG GUIDE

Double Sleeping Bags for Backpacking

Compare temperature ratings, weight and packed volume before replacing two individual sleeping bags with one shared system.

A double sleeping bag removes the gap between two separate bags and gives couples a shared sleeping space. The trade-off is weight and bulk: most double bags are designed for car camping, and only a small number are practical to carry on a multi-day backpacking trip.

A double sleeping bag must be matched with an insulated double pad or two secured single pads.

Choose a Sleeping Bag by Actual Overnight Temperature

Sleeping bags do not use R-values. Compare their ISO comfort temperature when it is published. A lower-limit rating describes a colder threshold and may not be warm enough for a person who sleeps cold.

Lowest Expected Overnight TemperatureSuggested Comfort Rating
Above 10°C10°C or lower
5°C to 10°C5°C or lower
0°C to 5°C0°C or lower
-5°C to 0°C-5°C or lower
Below -5°CChoose a bag with a verified comfort rating below the forecast minimum

Do not treat a 20°F/-7°C lower-limit rating as a -7°C comfort rating. Check whether the manufacturer publishes ISO comfort and limit values separately.

Double Sleeping Bag Comparison

Packed volumes below are calculated as cylinders from the manufacturers’ compressed or stuffed dimensions. They are approximate because a soft sleeping bag does not form a perfect cylinder.

Forecast

Find the lowest expected overnight temperature for the route and dates.

2

Rating

Use the comfort rating where available, not only the lower limit.

3

Pack Weight

Divide the bag weight between two hikers only when the system can be split safely.

4

Pack Space

Confirm the compressed bag fits alongside food, shelter and other shared gear.

Best backpacking option: The Big Agnes King Solomon 20° is the only model in this comparison with a weight and compressed volume that are reasonably manageable for two backpackers. At 1.79 kg, it weighs about 895 g per person, but its 22.2 L compressed volume still occupies substantial space in a 65 L backpack.

Double Bag or Two Single Bags?

A double bag is most useful for couples who always camp together and value a shared sleeping surface. Two single bags remain more flexible because each person carries an independent sleep system, temperature preferences can differ, and one equipment failure does not affect both hikers.

Advantages of a Double Sleeping Bag

Disadvantages for Backpacking

The Sleeping Pad Is Part of the System

Compressed insulation beneath the body provides little warmth. Use an insulated double sleeping pad or two pads secured together. Check the bag’s required pad dimensions before buying: double bags vary considerably in width, and some pad-attachment systems will not fit every double pad.

FAQ

Are double sleeping bags suitable for backpacking?

Most are not. Synthetic double bags commonly weigh more than 3 kg and occupy more than 35 L. The down-filled Big Agnes King Solomon is substantially lighter and smaller.

What temperature rating should I use?

Choose a comfort rating at or below the lowest expected overnight temperature. When only a lower-limit rating is published, allow a warmer margin, especially for sleepers who tend to feel cold.

Can a double sleeping bag replace a sleeping pad?

No. A sleeping pad provides cushioning and ground insulation. A double bag still requires an insulated pad system.

Can two people split the weight?

Only if the bag, storage sack or associated pad system can be divided without exposing either person to unacceptable risk if the hikers become separated.

How TrailReady Helps

TrailReady evaluates sleeping-bag temperature capability together with sleeping-pad insulation, pack capacity, trip duration and expected overnight conditions. This prevents a warm bag from being paired with an inadequately insulated pad or a sleep system that occupies too much of the available backpack volume.

Use TrailReady to plan your next backpacking trip and build a gear list based on your route, season, trip length, and expected conditions.
